About

Having spent many years stuck in offices (and home during the pandemic), I love to see a painting that momentarily ‘transports’ me somewhere by capturing the effects of light on colour and form.

As such, I paint representational pieces of art in an effort to capture the rapidly changing world around us. They may be impressionistic or they may be realistic, but I don’t want them to be photographic. I want the art to look and feel like a painting.

The beauty of oil is its flexibility in seeking to represent what you can see and feel: opacity, transparency, smooth passages, textured passages with brush marks, knife marks, and so on.

Painting in oils, works will sometimes be small ‘plein air’ studies painted outdoors rapidly ‘alla prima’ (one session), but sometimes several, to record the true colours and light in front of me before it races toward the horizon. At other times I use these studies, reference photos and memories of the occasion on which the paintings are based to produce larger pieces in the studio.

Although I am currently based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with my wife and daughter, I have travelled widely and lived in the UK most of my life. As such, I am as drawn to producing work from other countries as I am to the stunning desert, coast and mountains of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al-Khaimah (RAK) and the wider UAE.

Please do get in touch if you would like to learn more; I would be very happy to answer any questions you may have about it.
